Associated Recreation Council (ARC) is excited to announce Sebastian Wilson as the organization’s new Advisory Council Manager.
Sebastian began his career as a childcare counselor with ARC back in 1998, where he worked for ARC in various capacities until 2017.
He also spent nearly a decade with Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) with the Recreation Division, and as a result, has a unique understanding of the ARC/SPR partnership.
While at SPR, Sebastian was a Core Team Member in the city’s Race and Social Justice Initiative, and was also a department Change Team co-lead, policy advisor, facilitator and trainer.
Get to know Sebastian and learn more about his experience with ARC and SPR!
Where are you from?
I am born and raised in Seattle. I spent most of my days in the north-end of town and through my employment with SPR, I was privileged enough to build meaningful relationships with people representing just about every community within the city.
I love this city and for those of us who are lucky enough to have been here since birth understand the small-town aspects of it. We also have a tremendous appreciation for its quirks and peaceful energy. If you are not from Seattle, those quirks are what keeps you here.
What brought you to ARC?
ARC and SPR partnered programs were a valuable part of my upbringing. My mother raised two sons on her own and our local community centers and parks were a vital resource for her and helped broaden my world as a child.
I believe deeply in the mission of ARC and the work of SPR for the communities of Seattle. Returning to ARC is a bit like returning home.
What is your favorite aspect of working in recreation?
My favorite aspect of working in recreation by far is that it is centered on fun, cooperation and community-building. Recreation helps meet the human needs of love and belonging.
What are you most looking forward to in your role as Advisory Council Manager?
I’m looking forward to engaging with thoughtful and dedicated community members across the city and supporting their efforts to build a healthy neighborhood for current and future generations.
